Mrs Monk began singing a made up improvised song about the BBC news-reader Brian Perkins. She did this on the way to Waitrose, and she enjoyed belting it out loud and not caring about the turning heads at traffic lights.

Radio Four invited listeners to submit poems in an open competition one Valentines Day and I submitted her song on her behalf.

Imagine our surprise when they asked her to perform her song.

Imagine her surprise when she won the competition.

Imagine her disappointment when the prise turned out to be diddly squat.
